Model United Nations Assembly 2024

The good folks at the Westhaven Rotary kindly sponsored three teams of our students to attend the 2024 Model United Nations Assembly held at Rosmini College this year. ÐãÉ«Ö±²¥’s was ably represented by Mateo Afoa, Montell Laumea, Solomon Nash, Finn Llyod, Josh Benoza, Joseph Samuels, Owen Turner, Miguel Gazo and Josiah Vaai-Tupai. We managed to wrangle some particularly interesting countries this time Saudi Arabia, Slovenia and the highly controversial Israel.

Our boys performed well under some incredibly high pressure. Watching the avalanche of Points of Information when Israel finished speaking was a highlight. The team of Josiah, Montell and Joseph coolly and respectfully dealt with the questions. Saudi Arabia attempted the somewhat impossible task of trying to reform the structure of the United Nations and Finn spoke persuasively to the unfairness of the veto but to no avail.

Beyond the debate the students cultivated critical thinking and collaboration skills as they attempted to work with vastly different perspectives on a wide range of issues. They heard from Chris Carter as he spoke about his experience serving the United Nations in Afghanistan and hopefully we are both empowering our students to engage with wider real world issues and teaching our students to tackle the problems of our interconnected world.
