Community Service 16 August 2024

I would like to commend Josiah Vaai-Tupa'i, Manatu Tu'akalau, Montell Laumea, and Mavicle Auvaa for their outstanding contribution to the recent July 2024 School Holiday Programme at Wesley Community Centre, Mt Roskill. These young men exemplified the Marist values of love, community, and service by dedicating their time and energy to mentoring up to 70 children aged 8 to 16. Through activities in Performing Arts, Sports, Games, Arts and Crafts, and assisting with program set-up and pack-down, they fostered a positive and nurturing environment for the young participants. Their dedication and admirable conduct throughout the program did not go unnoticed and reflected the commitment of ɫֱ's College to nurturing individuals who make meaningful contributions to their communities. We are grateful for their service and look forward to future collaborations.

Well done to Duncan Hogg, Jan Maglangit, and Julius Siu, who have either fulfilled or are making great progress in fulfilling their college service commitment.

  • Duncan Hogg pictured manning the BBQ during Saturday Morning Rugby at ɫֱ's.
  • Jan Maglangit contributed to environmental conservation by planting trees for Conservation New Zealand. His efforts in caring for our planet reflect the Marist value of stewardship and responsibility for creation.
  • Julius Siu has been actively involved in volunteer work at St Mary's Parish in Avondale. His willingness to serve and support his community highlights the Marist principles of compassion and solidarity.

These young men have truly made a positive impact in their communities and exemplified the values we hold dear as a college.

Incredibly proud of the work done by Mark, Jireh, and Jesse Lemalu at the LIFE Church Community Kitchens in Birkenhead and Birkdale this year. These outstanding young men have each dedicated around 30 hours of their time to make a positive impact in our community.

Their efforts included loading and unloading food and gear, setting up the hall, serving delicious meals, and welcoming people with open arms and warm hearts. They stood roadside with signs to draw people in and took the time to connect with and pray over those in need.

Their commitment and compassion exemplify the spirit of service and community that we value here at ɫֱ's College. Thank you, Mark, Jireh, and Jesse, for your dedication and for making a real impact on the lives of others. Keep up the fantastic work!

Well done to Toby Strawbridge, who volunteered for the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House during the 2nd week of the school holidays, from July 15 to July 19. From all accounts Toby was an incredible help and truly went above and beyond!

Each day, Toby arrived with a positive attitude, ɫֱing bright and early at 9 am to tackle the large load of dishes from the park and assisting with a variety of tasks.

From helping our keepers with reptile servicing and feeding the birds to critiquing keeper talks and supporting our Mahoenui Giant wētā servicing, Toby was involved in it all.

He also played a key role in making and placing enrichment for our birds, providing personal enrichment for our Pukeko, River, and assisting with our mealworm breeding facility. Toby didn’t shy away from cleaning ponds, observing the treatment of a whio with a sore foot, and candling kiwi eggs. He even got to see juvenile kiwi health checks and beak cleaning.

Well done Toby, for your hard work and fulfilling your community service obligation in such an awesome way.
