Lion NZ Leadership Sailing Trip 2025

The Lion New Zealand Leadership Sailing Trip was an amazing experience for the young men selected from Year 12 and 13. These twenty-three young men have been highlighted as potential and top leaders of ÐãÉ«Ö±²¥’s College. Mr Josh Samuela and myself also had the opportunity of joining these young men on this journey.

We set sail from the Viaduct Harbour on the morning of Wednesday 19 March. As we made our way to Kawau Island, the former home of Governor Sir George Grey, the weather frowned upon us. Despite heavy rain and cold winds, the young men kept their and the crew's spirits up by serenading us with songs which have become so familiar to the halls of ÐãÉ«Ö±²¥’s College. The young men were also taught some of the nautical terms and how to sail a boat, with many taking turns hoisting the sail and working the rig. Once we reached Kawau Island in the afternoon, the sun was once again shining, which allowed the young men to enjoy a swim. After dinner, some of them enjoyed a bit of fishing where some were able to catch a few snapper. We called it a night as the boys were shown a documentary on Sir Peter Blake, his journey and his leadership, which led to New Zealand winning the America’s Cup in 1995.

The next day, after a 7am swim, the young men were able to explore Kawau Island, where a competitive game of football took place, as peacocks frolicked around. We then set sail to Rotoroa Island with some of the young men now having the opportunity to navigate and sail the boat, while once again serenading the crew with songs. However, strong winds and currents caused a deviation from this destination, resulting in us dropping anchor at Motutapu Island. A kayak race between two teams was followed by another afternoon swim. The young men then had the opportunity to go ashore on Motutapu Island for hiking where they got to explore the army bomb shelters and bunkers from World War II.

On the third day, after another 7am swim, the young men were now somewhat expert sailors as they hoisted the sail and manned the rig. More of them took the opportunity to navigate and sail the boat back to Auckland. As the young men did their final thank you to the crew in the form of a song, the crew remarked that this had been one of the best cohorts that they had had the opportunity to take on this trip.

This trip provided an opportunity for the young men to fulfil their leadership potential and grow closer to their brothers. Furthermore, it also allowed them to step out of their comfort zone while ensuring that they create memories which very few people are fortunate enough to experience. The young men took every opportunity that was presented to them while always carrying themselves as leaders of ÐãÉ«Ö±²¥’s College.
